Update on scholarships

Three Professor CSP Hunter scholarships for early career scholars have now been awarded, and we would like to award more!

If you finished either your MA or PhD in Theology or Philosophy in the last 6 years, live within 3 hours of the Heythrop Library’s reading room at Mount Street in Mayfair, and want to benefit from membership of the impressive Heythrop Library, this might be for you! For more information about eligibility, about those scholars who have already received a scholarship, and how to apply, please click here.

About the scholarships

The Heythrop Library’s collections are owned and maintained by the Jesuits in Britain, and the reading room of the library is based in the London Jesuit Centre in Mayfair. The collection includes over 200,000 books and journals across four sites. About 8,000 books and the latest issues of about 200 journals are stored at the London Jesuit Centre. The earliest books go back to 1614.

In December 2022, Professor Carl Stephen Patrick Hunter OBE, who is a longstanding parishioner of the Jesuit church at Farm Street, generously offered to fund Heythrop Library membership for early career scholars in Theology or Philosophy.

Clemens Gresser, Heythrop Librarian, said:

"It is great to see that we have had good interest in these scholarships, and we hope that the remaining 7 scholarships for 2023 will find academics who will make use of our (primarily) print collections. So far, we have only attracted theologians. Might you be our first recipient who is a philosopher? Please help us to spread the word, so that Professor Hunter’s generosity will lead to us being able to support more early career academics!"
